What to Expect and How to Prepare for a Tree Removal Service

There are more than three trillion trees in the world. That's about 400 trees for every man, woman, and child on the planet.

Trees are beautiful things. But if you've got one in your back yard that's getting too big, your only option may be to have it removed.

What exactly happens during tree removal? How is it done? What remains? And what do you need to do before it's removed?

Read on as we take a look at what you can expect from a tree removal service.

What to Expect

What to expect from a tree removal service will depend on a number of factors.

The size of your tree will affect how the removal takes place. The location of your tree will also be an issue. A tree that stands alone far from any buildings will be much easier to remove than one that is close to a house, or near to power lines.

But in general tree removals will follow similar processes.

What Will It Cost?

The cost of removing a tree will depend on the size and how difficult it is to remove.

As a rough ballpark, expect to pay anything from a couple of hundred dollars for a small tree to more than a thousand dollars for a large tree that requires careful removal. There will also be additional charges if you want to have the stump removed, or ground down so that it is not protruding.

It always worth consulting with your tree removal service to get an idea of the costs in your specific case.

What Will It Involve?

There are two main methods for tree removal.

If the tree has enough space, then it is possible to cut the tree down in one piece. The trunk is cut from the direction that it needs to fall. Once the tree has fallen to the ground, it is then cut up into smaller pieces.

If the tree is close to buildings or power lines, then this method isn't practical or safe. In these cases, the tree would be scaled, and branches cut off individually from the top down. If necessary, these will be secured with ropes so that they don't fall into power lines or onto buildings.

What Will Be Left?

For a typical removal, the tree would be cut down to a low stump.

The branches would either be cut up into regular pieces for use as firewood or removed depending on the client's wishes. If you want to get rid of the stump, you can opt to have it removed entirely, or have it ground down until it is no longer visible.

Stump removal will usually be an additional charge as it involves a lot more work than leaving the stump in place.

How to Prepare

If you are planning on having a tree removed, there are some preparations you will need to make first.

These are nothing too onerous but will make life easier for your tree removal service. By preparing your property in advance it means that your tree can be removed quickly and safely with the minimum of fuss.

Make Space for the Vehicles

There will usually be a lot of equipment involved in tree removal.

So make sure that there is enough space for your tree removal service to park their vehicles. There will likely be a large truck, as well as wood chipper that they will need to be able to easily access. The closer they can park to your property, the better.

It may be worth trying to reserve some parking spaces in advance rather than leaving it to luck.

Clear Access to the Tree

The workers will need to go back and forth from their vehicles to the tree.

So make sure that there is a clear route for them to get back and forth. The last thing you want is for them trying to squeeze past the cars parked on the driveway when they're hauling wood or equipment.

If there is alternative access to your yard this can make things a lot easier. You may need to inform your neighbors about what is going to happen too.

Remove Anything Breakable

There are likely to be a lot of branches removed from the tree.

So if you have any breakable items near the tree such as plant pots or furniture, move these out of the way or to a different location. If your tree removal service has to move items themselves, it will make the process longer and you may receive further charges for the additional time.

Also to try to keep your yard clear of any animals for the duration of the process as they could cause a serious safety hazard to themselves and the workers.

Agree on What You Require

You should always arrange a consultation with your tree removal service so that they can inspect the site and you can agree on what you require.

If you want to have the stump removed, this is something that you would need to agree on in advance. If you suddenly decide you want it done once the work is over, it may not be possible to do it in the same visit. It may also cost you more than you would have paid had you agreed to it before the work started.

Take the time to discuss all your options so that everyone is clear on the work that will take place.
