Most storm prep advice tells you what to do the week before a major storm arrives: trim branches, clear gutters, secure loose items. But by then, it’s often too late to catch the defects that actually cause a tree to fail in high winds. Those problems, like a cracked union or a hollow trunk, usually take root long before storm season starts, which is why a proper inspection needs to happen well in advance.
Here’s a practical checklist to help Southwest Florida homeowners spot the warning signs that a tree may not hold up when storm winds arrive.
Why a Structural Inspection Matters More Than General Prep
Research from the University of Florida’s IFAS Gardening Solutions program found that trees with correct structural pruning and well-spaced canopies consistently outperform unpruned or poorly maintained trees during high winds. Separate UF/IFAS research on storm-resistant trees points to branch failure as one of the most preventable causes of storm damage, and notes that improper pruning practices, like removing too much of the lower canopy at once, can actually shift weight outward and make a tree more likely to break in wind.
In other words, the trees most likely to come down in a hurricane usually show warning signs well before the storm ever forms. A trained eye just needs to know where to look.
The 7-Point Pre-Storm Tree Inspection Checklist
- Co-dominant stems and weak unions. Look for two or more trunks growing from roughly the same point, especially where bark appears pinched or included between them. UF/IFAS research identifies included bark at branch unions as one of the clearest predictors of failure in high winds.
- Cavities, cracks, or decay in the trunk. Soft, hollow-sounding wood or visible cracks running along the trunk are signs of internal decay that can weaken a tree’s ability to withstand wind loads, even if the canopy looks healthy.
- Dead, hanging, or weakly attached branches. Any limb that’s dead, cracked, or loosely connected to the main stem is a hazard year-round, and becomes a projectile risk once wind speeds pick up.
- An overly dense or “lion-tailed” canopy. A canopy that’s too thick catches more wind, while one that’s been over-thinned or over-lifted (removing too many interior branches) shifts weight to the branch tips, both of which increase the odds of breakage.
- Visible leaning or recent shifting at the base. A tree that leans, or shows cracked or lifted soil around its root flare, may have a compromised root system and could be at risk of uprooting.
- Construction or root damage. Trees with roots cut or compacted during nearby construction, driveway work, or utility installation are more prone to toppling, even years after the original damage occurred.
- Tree age, size, and proximity to structures. Very young trees haven’t developed a deep root system yet, while older, large trees are more likely to carry hidden decay. Either one growing near a home, driveway, or power line warrants a closer look.
If you notice one or more of these signs, it doesn’t necessarily mean a tree has to come down. It does mean the tree deserves a professional evaluation before the stormy season is underway.
What to Do When an Inspection Turns Up a Red Flag
Depending on what a certified arborist finds, there are usually a few paths forward:
- Structural or prescription pruning. For trees with correctable issues, like a dense canopy or a single weak limb, targeted tree trimming and pruning can improve wind resistance without removing the tree.
- Cabling or bracing. Trees with a structurally weak union but an otherwise healthy canopy can sometimes be stabilized with support systems installed by a certified arborist, rather than removed outright.

When to Bring in a Certified Arborist
